This exciting new development by Kāinga Ora in Central Auckland’s iconic Greys Avenue combines 276 new homes built around a supportive environment to enable its residents to connect and be active members of the community.
Te Mātāwai offers its residents a wide range of services. Kāinga Ora and Kāhui Tū Kaha combine public housing with a range of services to meet the individual needs of residents. By creating a supportive environment for our residents they can have the opportunity to build social connections within this new neighbourhood.
Of the 276 new apartments at Te Mātāwai, 200 will be designated as public homes with 24/7 on site support services available enabling us to support a number of people from the rough sleeping community into sustainable tenancies. The existing public housing building next door will also have access to the 24/7 support.

- 24/7 on-site support networks with improved access to healthcare services
- An operational approach that supports a strong sense of community with shared spaces that allow for activities, recreation and connection
- The ground floor features four commercial spaces, with businesses selected to support the needs of residents and local community.
Waitapu:
- 22 studio units
- 33 one-bedroom units
- 21 two-bedroom units
Waiora:
- 32 studio units
- 17 one-bedroom units
- 31 1.5-bedroom units
Wainui:
- 36 studio units
- 84 one-bedroom units
A more supportive approach, Te Mātāwai combines permanent public housing with supportive services designed for people who need it most. Within this environment, residents can build positive social networks and have accessible services that will support their health, well-being and personal development.

The Kāinga Ora regional office is based in the building. As well as this team, there is a facilities manager, a community development team, and the 24/7 Hapori Kaitiaki community guardians.
Support services are run by Kāhui Tū Kaha, also on site 24/7.

2019
- Demolition of 139 Greys Ave is about to move into the next phase, hard demolition. This is where the building structure will start being removed and early next year, the site will be at ground level - October 2019
- Resourse consent to build 276 apartments at 139 Greys Ave was approved by Auckland Council in August 2019
- Demolition of 139 Greys Ave, central Auckland will soon start. The first step in the process will see the asbestos safely removed from the building. Hard demolition will start later this year - April 2019
