With the strong and increasing demand for housing in Hamilton and the Waikato, Kāinga Ora has a large build programme underway to redevelop some existing state housing. By making better use of existing properties which have large sections, some of which are next to each other, we will replace these older homes with more modern, warm and dry homes. Future redevelopment projects are being looked at as many of our homes were built prior to 1980. We are investigating the best use of all our houses to ensure they meet the needs of our customers.

Cambridge Road background
In 2017, Council purchased 3.7535 hectares of land at 1262 Cambridge Road with the intention of developing it for afforable housing, including housing for the elderly. As part of this project, the Council has sold a 1.4 hectare portion of the site to Kāinga Ora for the purpose of building homes for our older customers.
Kāinga Ora will now go through our internal planning processes to confirm what we can do on the site. Initial draft concepts indicate that we could build approximately 30 new stand-alone and duplex, single-storey 1 or 2 bedroom homes.
