Investing in the future of the Kāpiti Coast

This morning, Housing Minister Megan Woods announced the purchase of land at 59-69 Raumati Road in Raumati Beach to help meet the need for more housing for people and whānau in the in Kāpiti Coast District.
Greg Groufsky, Regional Director Greater Wellington Region says that the purchase is good news for those who call the Kāpiti Coast home.
“We know there is a need for all types of housing on the Kāpiti Coast and this purchase gives us the opportunity to work closely with Kāpiti Coast District Council, local iwi, partners and residents to deliver warm, dry, modern housing.”
Kāpiti Coast District Mayor Janet Holborow says:
“Through our work to better understand housing need over the last few years, we know that housing stress in Kāpiti is widespread and negatively impacting a range of wellbeing factors like education, community connectedness and employment. The need for a range of social housing solutions, particularly in the wake of COVID-19, far outpaces current supply locally.”
“We are delighted that Kāinga Ora has recognised the need in our district and is investing in increasing the quality public housing supply.”
Plans for the number and type of homes to be built on the site are still being developed but early estimates indicate that around 100 homes could potentially be delivered.
“It is very early in the process and we want to work hand-in-hand with partners and residents to understand how we can best support the community we are building in. We are investing in the region and addressing the housing issues the District is facing currently in order to avoid the compounding of issues in the future. This purchase will go a long way towards that goal.” says Groufsky.
“Housing is a complex issue and the success of this project can’t just sit with one organisation or sector though. Iwi, central and local government, the private sector, community housing providers and the community must all work together in partnership to develop solutions that work for Kāpiti. We look forward to working collectively on this opportunity with Kāinga Ora,” adds Mayor Holborow.
As plans progress they will be shared with and consulted on with the community.
Details of purchase:
- $10,000,000 GST inclusive, in line with market evaluation
- 4.6360 Hectares
