The completion of 18 homes at Iorns Street North and three homes on Michael Street, along with two new homes in Dannevirke signifies a significant step forward in increasing the supply of much-needed housing in the region. Kāinga Ora has partnered with local developers to build a range of housing styles and types in the area.

Vicki McLaren, Regional Director of Greater Wellington Region at Kāinga Ora - Homes and Communities, expressed her excitement about the completion of these homes, stating, "Our goal is to provide much-needed public housing to the Wairarapa, and these completed homes represent the first step in our commitment to delivering a larger pipeline of housing projects in the region.

These are our first deliveries after a period of absence in the area. We are working alongside the housing providers in the area to support and supplement the good work that they are already doing.

“With at least 60 new homes planned for completion by the end of next year, we continue to look for opportunities that will help people get out of unstable living conditions into a warm, safe home,” said Vicki.

In addition to these developments, Kāinga Ora is actively progressing other housing projects in the Wairarapa. The East Street development in Greytown, featuring three three-bedroom homes and one five-bedroom (fully accessible) home, is scheduled to start construction late this year, with completion expected by mid-late 2024.

The George Street development in Masterton, comprising four two-bedroom homes and eight three-bedroom homes, is progressing well, with completion expected by May 2024. Other developments in Masterton, including Gordon Street and High Street, are also underway and will contribute to increasing housing supply in the region.

We are also excited to now have an opportunity to provide much needed homes in Featherston.

“ Kāinga Ora has finalised an agreement that will see us partner with a developer to deliver 11 homes at Fitzherbert St, meaning a presence of Kāinga Ora state homes across the region – with more to come,“ said Vicki.

These developments demonstrate Kāinga Ora's commitment to partnering with local communities, councils, and developers to deliver warm, safe, and modern homes for individuals and families in need. By increasing the supply of public housing, Kāinga Ora aims to address the housing challenges faced by the Wairarapa community and provide a stable foundation for a brighter future.
