Community at the heart of new Mangere development

The Mangere Development has taken another leap forward, with the opening of the innovative Bader Drive, McKenzie Road and Cessna Place complex.
Boasting 65 new warm, dry homes on a 6,082 sqm site, the development replaces 16 older state homes built in the 1960s. The homes are part of the Mangere Development(external link), which will see approximately 10,000 new public, affordable and market housing delivered alongside upgraded amenities and infrastructure over the next 15 to 20 years.
Complete with a community room, barbecue facilities, fruit trees, shared garden space, playground, cycle track and a bike storage area, Housing Minister Megan Woods says community lies at the heart of the new development.
“These are not just houses, these are going to be homes – the places where memories are made, where lives are lived and hopes are formed.”
In total, there are 30 one-bedroom homes and 29 two-bedroom homes spread across four three-story blocks, as well as six four-bedroom terrace homes, each of which are 130m2 in size.
Kāinga Ora Deputy Chief Executive Construction and Innovation Patrick Dougherty says the complex makes a “bold statement in a changing neighbourhood”.
“The project uses Cross-Laminated Timber, which is a type of off-site manufacturing that Kāinga Ora has been amongst the first to adopt extensively in New Zealand.
“This technology allows for faster construction compared to projects that use traditional methods.”
Kāinga Ora Board Chair Vui Mark Gosche says the development meets 6 Homestar standards, meaning the homes are healthier and more cost effective to keep warm and dry compared to a typical new houses built to the Building Code.
“To be able to keep yourself warm and your children healthy is hugely important, and can help ease pressure on our health system.”
Designed by architectural firm Peddlethorp, the development was completed by Kāinga Ora build partner Precision Construction. New residents will move in from late July.
