Keep doors and windows locked and secure when not in use. We put security catches on some windows in Kāinga Ora homes and flats. If you have trouble using them let us know.

If someone at your door says they work for us, ask to see their identification. If they can't provide any, call us immediately on 0800 801 601.

If you're going away:

  • make your home look lived in by leaving the radio or a light on. You can purchase timers that will switch lights on or off at scheduled times.
  • ask a neighbour, relative or friend to clear your mail, or ask New Zealand Post to hold it for you
  • see if someone you trust can mow the lawn for you and put your rubbish out.
  • If you're going to be away longer than 31 days you need to let us know.

To find out more about joining or starting a group in your area, call Neighbourhood Support New Zealand on 0800 463 444.

Here’s a good to know video that provides helpful information on how you and your whānau can be safe at home.
