Kāinga Ora is a pet friendly landlord

We know that pets can be great companions and we want our tenants and their whanāu to experience the many benefits of pet ownership.

By having a pet, Kāinga Ora tenants agree to follow local council bylaws and, if they live in an apartment, adhere to any body corporate rules relating to keeping pets in the building.

Being great pet owners

Like any other pet owner in New Zealand, our tenants are responsible for the containment, health and wellbeing of their pet – this includes but is not limited to:

  • food,
  • water,
  • exercise,
  • vet bills,
  • microchipping,
  • vaccinations,
  • desexing,
  • registration,
  • worming and
  • flea treatments.

To help our tenants be great pet owners we provide tips and advice and encourage them to seek further guidance from the relevant agencies.

If you have concerns about a pet

If a pet is being mistreated or you are concerned about the welfare of a pet, contact the SPCA(external link).

If a dog is wandering the street, barking loudly all day, creating a nuisance or attacks someone contact the local council Dog Control unit.
