Work has been done since the temporary closure to bring back a centre the community can rely on. As a result, Kāinga Ora and Y Central – both committed to supporting sustainable, thriving and inclusive communities – entered a partnership. Kāinga Ora is now responsible for the maintenance of the Berhampore Centennial Community Centre and Y Central manages the bookings and day-to-day business.

Abbie McKoy, Manager - Community Engagement and Partnerships at Kāinga Ora, says: “To enable vibrant community spaces, we must work in partnership with other organisations. At the same time, we are engaging with our customers and community on the wellbeing and social outcomes they want to see unlocked in these spaces.”

Community spaces are important to support social cohesion and wellbeing outcomes for Kāinga Ora customers and communities. Kāinga Ora is looking to create a networked approach with Y Central and other potential partners to support wellbeing outcomes and opportunities in the Wellington region in available community spaces.

Brendan Owens, Chief Executive of Y Central, says he is thrilled to work with Kāinga Ora to improve the life of New Zealanders. “We look forward to ‘activating’ community spaces within Housing Developments to create a holistic and strengths-based approach in supporting whānau. Our vision of building strong kids, strong families and strong communities means we are the ideal partner to support Kāinga Ora in creating safe, vibrant spaces in Wellington where people can connect, be active, have a sense of ‘belonging’ and just be themselves.”
