Double win for public housing at property awards
16 August 2022
Kāinga Ora has taken out two awards at the 2022 Property Industry Awards.
The awards event is run by Property Council New Zealand and celebrates successful delivery of projects, along with excellence in design and innovation in the built environment.
The Kāinga Ora St Georges Road development in Avondale achieved an excellence award in the Community and Affordable Housing category, with Busby Street development in Blockhouse Bay receiving a merit award in the same category.
General Manager Construction and Innovation Patrick Dougherty is delighted with the result.
“Special thanks goes to our Kāinga Ora teams and our build and design partners, particularly Ministry of Architecture + Interiors, RM Designs, Kalmar Construction and Miles Construction.
“These awards recognise that Kāinga Ora, along with our industry partners, continues to provide quality medium density developments within existing communities.
“Compact design is not only important in terms of delivering more homes, it also allows us to provide shared amenity where people can gather and build a sense of community.
“Our commitment to a more sustainable built future can be seen in the fact that Kāinga Ora developments are delivered to a New Zealand Green Building 6 Homestar rating. Busby Street pushed boundaries even further to become our second development to achieve a 7 Homestar rating.”
The two developments both incorporate off-site manufacturing components. They are also part of our supported housing programme, which means the homes provide warm and dry short-term accommodation for people and families in urgent need of housing.
St Georges Road development
Featuring 102 new homes of one to three bedrooms, St Georges Road includes a range of housing types from duplexes, walk-ups and apartments.
It also contains a multi-purpose community room, shared green space and a tenancy management office. Kāinga Ora partnered with Auckland Transport and Waka Kotahi to provide a connection to the Western Cycleway through the development.
What’s more, the four walk-up apartment buildings feature cross-laminated timber which enables long-term storage of carbon and reduces maintenance requirements over the life cycle of the buildings.
Busby Street development
The development consists of 17 two-bedroom homes within two, three-storey walk-up apartment buildings, along with a tenancy management office and children’s outdoor play area.
A range of innovative materials and methodologies were used to achieve exceptional energy efficiency at Busby Street. The buildings incorporate cross-laminated timber, light timber frame panels and bathroom and laundry pods.
