New warm and dry homes for Kerikeri

Twenty new public homes are planned across two properties on Clark Road.
These represent the largest two developments Kāinga Ora has ever undertaken in Kerikeri.
The new homes will consist of a mix of apartments and terraced homes. This is expected to include 12 homes within a three-level walk up apartment building on one property and 8 two-storey terraced homes on a neighbouring property.
Te Tai Tokerau Regional Director Jeff Murray says that with 456 applicants on the public housing wait list in the Far North region, there is an urgent need for more affordable housing.
“We are taking an area-wide approach to Kerikeri in order to speed up the delivery of new public homes.
“The Clark Road homes will enable us to grow our housing portfolio in the area from 42 to approximately 62 public homes.
“We are also exploring development options at other sites across the town, including a nearby King Street property.”
The fact that Clark Road is within walking distance of a growing town centre makes the location ideal for more compact housing, Jeff says.
“It will mean more people can live close to local schools, jobs, open spaces, shops, and other amenities.”
Off-street parking is incorporated and four of the homes will cater for people with mobility needs. This includes such things as level access and wider hallways.
Kāinga Ora is partnering with property developer Gemscott to deliver the new, modern homes at Clark Road.
Gemscott Project Manager Tim Jennings says it’s exciting to get plans underway. “We are really pleased to be working with Kāinga Ora to provide good quality, affordable housing in a central location in Kerikeri.”
Civil works are expected to commence in mid-2023, subject to resource consent approval. House construction is then anticipated to get under way in late 2023.
A drop in session about the new Clark Road homes was held in February and was well attended, Jeff says. “We will also continue to update the community as plans progress.”
