Keeping your home secure
There are lots of ways you can keep your home safe and belongings secure.
You can keep your home safe by locking and securing doors and windows when not in use. Kāinga Ora puts security catches on some windows in our homes, and can provide tips if you have any trouble using them. Just give us a call on 0800 801 601.
If someone comes to your door and says they work for Kāinga Ora, ask to see their identification. If they can't provide any, ask them to leave and call us immediately on 0800 801 601.
If you're going away:
- make your home look lived in by leaving the radio or a light on. Power point timers from your local hardware store can switch lights on or off at scheduled times.
- ask someone you trust like a neighbour, relative or friend to clear your mail. You can also ask New Zealand Post to hold it for you
- see if someone you trust can mow the lawn for you and put your rubbish out.
- as part of your Tenancy Agreement, Kāinga Ora needs to know if you're going to be away for more than 31 days.
It’s always a good idea to get to know the people in your neighbourhood, or even join your local Neighbourhood Support Group. We’re all safer when we work together.
To find out more about joining or starting a group in your area, call Neighbourhood Support New Zealand on 0800 463 444.
