Public housing design wins national NZIA awards

High and White Streets in Rangiora, which was designed by Rohan Collett Architects and built by Home, as well as Waterview Court in Auckland, designed by Ashton Mitchell and built by Latham Construction, have won national awards in the NZIA housing – multi-unit category.

The judging team said High and White development creates an accessible and welcoming enclave of homes which have been “thoughtfully proportioned and planned”.

“The 28-residence development has integrated accessible ramps into its landscaping, with paths, roads and small outdoor spaces creating a sense of home, sociability, safety and community.”

In regards to Waterview Court, the judges said the group of 120 striking and memorable homes generates a high-quality streetscape that will stand the test of time.

“[In addition,] away from the road and encircled by housing of differing scales, a generous greenspace and play area create a safe, engaging heart and a unique sense of place for the residents of this complex.”

General Manager Construction and Innovation Patrick Dougherty said the awards are great recognition for the architects, build partners and consultants involved, as well as for our in house development teams.

“These two developments reflect the way we are designing homes and communities that are not only more sustainable, but that also make better use of land and address the specific needs of a local area.

“The one to two storey High and White development provides great urban design outcomes in a way that is in keeping with the existing low-rise homes in a smaller community such as Rangiora,” Patrick said.

“By comparison, the Waterview Court development in Auckland features two to five storey terraced housing and apartments which accommodate a range of family sizes.

“It’s located on a busy arterial road within the central suburbs where demand for housing is higher and the convenience of apartment living has become more appealing to many.”

On top of the NZIA awards, High and White received an excellence award at the 2020 Property Industry Awards, as well as a Dulux Colour award. Waterview Court also took out an excellence award at the 2021 Property Industry Awards.
