New homes for Nelson

Planning is underway to build new warm, dry homes in Nelson, after Kāinga Ora bought a prominent central city site from the Nelson Masonic Hall.
Kāinga Ora Homes and Communities has purchased the 3000m2 site at 107 Nile Street, which was formerly occupied by the Nelson Masonic Hall. The site will be redeveloped to provide a community of up to 25 public homes for whānau in need.
Regional Director Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast Julia Campbell says the development will be a significant boost to housing in the city.
“We recognise the urgent need for more warm, dry homes in Nelson, and we’re pleased to have the opportunity to build new family homes in this central city location, which is close to schools, shops and other amenities,” Ms Campbell says.
“We’re still in the early planning stages of the development, so we don’t yet know exactly how many homes will be built, or where they will be placed on the site. Our early estimates are that we could build between 15 to 25 family homes, but we will confirm this as our plans progress.”
The former Masonic Hall building that is currently on the site was damaged by fire in 2019 and will be removed. It is still to be confirmed when this will occur, and when construction of the new homes will begin.
“We’ll have a much clearer idea of timeframes as we progress our plans for the site. We’re committed to designing a development with good quality homes and open spaces that brings the best outcomes for people living there, and the wider community,” Ms Campbell says.
Kāinga Ora will keep neighbours and other stakeholders informed as plans for the site develop.
