“Going into Christmas with a place to rest my head is something I’m truly grateful for,” he says.

Just in time for the festive season, the customer is moving into a brand-new Kāinga Ora home in central New Plymouth. It’s one of 14 new one-bedroom homes, all within easy walking distance of shops and essential services. These homes are part of Kāinga Ora’s ongoing work to renew and replace older homes across the country.

For many people on the Social Housing Register in New Plymouth, a one-bedroom home is exactly what they need. That’s why the completion of this development marks a significant milestone.

“This will be my first Christmas in my own home, which I am very grateful for. I’ve been homeless before, so having somewhere to rest my head and focus on what I want to accomplish next year means everything.”

He also spoke about the support he received from Kāinga Ora.

“Kāinga Ora didn’t just give me a house, they made me feel like I mattered. Every step of the way, they were kind and genuine, and I could tell they truly wanted to help. That made moving in so much easier.”

For these 14 households, the homes represent a fresh start, a chance to celebrate Christmas in comfort, and an opportunity to plan ahead. As the customer put it, “Through every dark night, there’s a brighter day.”
