More affordable homes for Tāmaki

People and whānau are starting to move in to 61 KiwiBuild homes in the new Hīnaki Street development built by NZ Living, located within Point England, Auckland.

Situated on the corner of Pilkington and Tripoli Roads, the development features 75 homes in total – 61 KiwiBuild and 14 market homes. The KiwiBuild homes are a mix of one, two and three bedrooms, each with their own balcony or patio. The purchase price ranged from $420,000 to $650,000.

The low-rise apartment complex is located within the Tāmaki regeneration area – a large-scale urban development project in the east Auckland suburbs of Glen Innes, Point England and Panmure.

Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities and the Tāmaki Regeneration Company (TRC) are working in partnership to deliver this large-scale project. Around 2,500 public homes are being replaced with approximately 10,500 new public and affordable housing over the next 20 years.

Caroline McDowall, Kāinga Ora General Manager Commercial, says the Hīnaki Street development delivers much-needed affordable housing in an area with high demand.

“The 61 KiwiBuild homes within this new development provide home ownership opportunities for individuals and whānau who would otherwise be priced out of the market. It is not just about the number of homes, but also the stability, security and new futures that have been enabled as a result.”

Addressing the affordable housing challenge requires collaboration, adds Caroline.

“The strong relationship between Kāinga Ora, NZ Living and Tāmaki Regeneration Company has facilitated this positive housing outcome for the local community. It is a great example of Kāinga Ora working with private developers and local partners to increase the supply of affordable homes.”

The Hīnaki Street development is comprised of five three-level, walk-up apartment buildings.

NZ Living Director Shane Brealey says the innovative medium-density model supports the Tāmaki regeneration by maximising land use to deliver more high-quality, affordable housing options.

“It’s about making home ownership a reality for people who would otherwise not be able to buy,” says Shane.

“Medium-density housing strikes a good balance between the increased densities needed in a growing city and providing real homes rather than just impersonal apartments.

“Our Hīnaki Street apartments are built around a large communal green space, with huge nīkau palms and a pōhutakawa tree. A three metre-high sculpture by renowned artist Anton Forde stands at the entrance.”

NZ Living has partnered with Kāinga Ora to deliver around 280 KiwiBuild homes in developments throughout Auckland, some of which have already been built or are under construction.
