Kāinga Ora to deliver homes for older Aucklanders
21 July 2022
Kāinga Ora will deliver 52 new homes for older Aucklanders through a collaboration with Eke Panuku and Haumaru Housing.
Twelve units at 27-31 Greenslade Crescent in Northcote will be redeveloped into one-bedroom homes within a five-storey apartment building for older people.
Kāinga Ora will lease the land from Eke Panuku (on behalf of Auckland Council) and community housing provider, Haumaru Housing, will manage the homes.
The homes will be warm and dry, and meet the Homestar 6 standard. On the ground floor, residents will enjoy a shared common room, an outdoor patio area, a service room, a secure area for mobility scooters and a main lobby, with access to two lifts servicing the upper floors. The apartments will be wheelchair-accessible and include wet area bathrooms.
With a growing population of people over the age of 65, Tāmaki Makaurau needs more affordable rental housing. The homes at Greenslade Crescent are just one of several apartment complexes Kāinga Ora is in the process of delivering specifically for older public housing customers. This is about enabling people to age in place in homes which are suited to their needs.
Other examples of Kāinga Ora senior housing projects currently at various stages of development include 41 apartments on Wilson Road in Glen Eden, 123 apartments on Osterley Way in Manukau and 192 apartments at Highbury Triangle in Avondale.
Patrick Dougherty, General Manager Construction and Innovation at Kāinga Ora said of the Greenslade Crescent project:
“This is a terrific step towards providing more homes to older Aucklanders who need them. Upon completion, we’ll be handing over to Haumaru Housing for an initial management term of 25 years. No doubt the tenants of this high-quality development will know that they’re in good hands, and on the doorstep of such an accessible community, with upcoming amenities such as Te Ara Awataha (the Northcote Greenway) adding to the appeal.”
Work on the new development will begin in early 2023.
