Kāinga Ora recently purchased the 4,713 sqm site at 89-93 Clyde Street, Tokoroa which currently has 4 vacant buildings, garages and car parks, but now will see new modern, warm, dry and quality homes on the site.

While plans are still to be confirmed, initial estimates are that there could be 14 new warm, dry and modern homes delivered here.

Mark Rawson , Regional Director Waikato, Kāinga Ora says the purchase is good news for plans to increase the number of state homes for those who are in need of housing.

“We currently have 22 homes in Tokoroa, so this purchase, along with other work underway to deliver 8 new homes on Kāinga Ora sites across town means we are have the potential to nearly double the amount of Kāinga Ora public housing supply in Tokoroa,” says Mark.

With 129 people on the housing register in South Waikato as of June 2022, this work will help to meet the urgent need in the area.

“The need for housing has increased over the years in Tokoroa we are so pleased that through this land purchase we have the potential to provide a place to call home for so many families in a site that has great access to schools, services and amenity,” says Mark.

Mark outlined the importance of working with the community as plans are confirmed.

“We are committed to keeping the community updated as plans progress. Once initial high-level concept plans for the site have been developed, we will share these with the community,” says Mark.

South Waikato Mayor Gary Petley welcomed the news of plans for the new homes.

“Council welcomes these plans to develop much-needed public housing in Tokoroa,” said Mayor Petley. “We will continue to work closely with Kainga Ora to facilitate and enable further developments across the district to benefit our communities.”

There are opportunities coming up to meet the team and learn more.

“We plan to be at the Tokoroa Community Centre on Maraetai Road every couple of months to talk with individuals and share updates.  Our next drop in session is from 10:30 – noon on Thursday 27 October,” said Mark.
