New state homes for Hastings, with more on the way

“The blessing of these homes marks good progress with the delivery of this 44 home development, and wider work to deliver new much needed, warm, dry and healthy homes in Hastings, alongside our partners.”

Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst and members of Ngāti Kahungunu along with Kāinga Ora staff and local officials attended the blessing ceremony for the nine homes at Raureka.

The Hastings mayor said it was exciting to have these homes ready for families to move into.

“Two years ago we were at this site and realised how quickly we needed to build these homes - which are making it possible for people to move out of motels.

“We are proud of the place-based plan Hastings District Council took to Government to work in partnership with iwi, and to employ local people to bring quality warm, safe homes to our community.”

The Raureka development will see quality, modern homes delivered with a mix of between one and five-bedroom family homes.

The new, low maintenance homes will be fully insulated, with carpets, curtains, double glazing and heat pumps.

“We’re delivering the homes in stages, helping provide homes to people and whānau in need as soon as we can.”

“The completion of these nine homes will bring us to 16 homes completed at Raureka with the remaining 28 to be delivered in stages by early 2021,” said Darren.

In addition to the nine homes blessed today, five were completed late September with whānau moving in now, and two homes for transitional housing were delivered mid-2019. 

These homes are part of the Hastings Place Based approach which is helping deliver more homes at scale and pace.  Around the end of 2021, Kāinga Ora aims to have delivered 160 extra warm, dry quality homes in Hastings.

Kāinga Ora is working with partner agencies on the Hastings Place Based approach, which is making good progress in understanding the specific housing challenges for Hastings and tailoring responses for them.

“The strength of the Place Based approach is key agencies working together, and collaborating to provide a range of housing for low-moderate income households,” said Darren.

Around 40 additional homes, as part of the place based approach, will be provided through papakāinga housing, a Community Housing Provider, and an iwi development.
