There is an urgent need for public housing in Palmerston North - currently there are 762 families on the Housing register who are waiting for a home.

“We know that many whānau do not have a suitable place to live and this purchase is going to make all the difference to so many families,” says Graeme Broderick, Regional Director - Taranaki, Whanganui, and Manawatū.

Brad Davis, General Counsel, Soho Group says:

“Soho is excited to partner with Kāinga Ora to bring medium density housing to Palmerston North. Soho’s innovative 50 unit, mixed typology development with a community space is a progressive step towards a more affordable housing landscape across New Zealand. We are proud to be contributing to the number of warm, dry and safe homes needed for the people of Palmerston North and Manawatū region.”

“It’s early stages of development and we are working closely with Soho Group to ensure the homes will best meet the needs of the people and families who will live there,” says Broderick.

A letter has been delivered recently informing neighbours of the intention to purchase and a community drop in session is taking place on the 19th of October.

“We are reaching out to the community to keep neighbours updated and answer any questions they may have. We will continue to update the community as plan progress. We will also be working to ensure that families who eventually call North Street home will be supported to live well in their homes and thrive in their community.”

The homes are expected to be ready for local people and families to move into by the end of 2024.
