New homes for New Plymouth
21 Huitanguru 2023
To help meet the need for more homes for people in New Plymouth, Kāinga Ora is seeking feedback on proposals to build new state houses in New Plymouth. The proposals will be shared at a series of community drop-in sessions starting on Tuesday 21 February.
Our early plans suggest we could replace around 40 older homes across our larger sites with well over 100 new warm, dry and healthy homes across New Plymouth. The plans will focus initially on the suburbs of Westown, Frankleigh Park, Brooklands, Vogeltown and Spotswood.
These housing proposals are part of our redevelopment programme. This is where we remove older houses on our larger sections which are past their best, and replace them with a greater number of newly built warm and dry homes that better meet the needs of our customers today. This helps us make the best use of the existing land we own, to deliver a greater number of homes to meet the urgent need in our communities.
Depending on the condition of these older houses, we may look to relocate some of them, or deconstruct the house to use materials in other ways. As a last resort, we will demolish and recycle the materials wherever possible.
As of December 2022, there are 348 families on the housing register in New Plymouth. This is far too many people who are living in cars, motels, overcrowded homes and in other unsuitable conditions. Building more warm, dry homes would be really good news for these families and allow them to get on with their lives.
It’s important to note these are only initial stages of our proposed plans which could change as we progress. Before we look to build more homes, we are keen to work with the New Plymouth community to understand what works for the community, what doesn’t, and what can be improved.
