One of the ways it plans to continue to increase the supply of public housing in the region is by replacing some of its older homes with more new homes on the same site.

The redevelopment of the four sites at 2-12, 40-42, 48 and 53-55 Albertson Ave, Port Chalmers will see 11 existing dwellings, nearing the end of their economic life, replaced with 20 new, warm and dry homes for whānau in need.

The 20 new homes will be mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom with 9 built to full universal design standards, which means they are more accessible and are, or can be made to be, fit for purpose for customers with mobility issues.

Otago Southland Regional Director, Kerrie Young says increasing the number of homes on some of our sites means more people can live in areas like Port Chalmers that are close to schools, open spaces, shops and other amenities.

“There is an urgent need for more public housing options in Dunedin and the redevelopment of these sites will help us meet some of this need.

“In our planning for new homes, we consider a number of things, such as privacy, safety and access to sunlight which have all been a top priority for these redevelopments,” says Ms Young.

Demolition of the existing homes and site preparations are expected to commence on some of the sites in the second half of this year.

“As we progress these redevelopments, we will keep neighbours, the local community and key stakeholders well informed, offering opportunities for people to engage with us on this work.

“We’re really looking forward to construction starting and delivering these new homes to the Port Chalmers community,” Ms Young says.
