Atkinson Ave delivers 83 more transitional homes for Ōtahuhu

Split across two buildings, Atkinson Ave provides 54 one-bedroom and 29 two-bedroom units for people in urgent need of housing providing a great boost in the supply of housing to the area.

This marks the fourth transitional housing development delivered by Kāinga Ora in Auckland over the past two months – bringing the delivery total to 129 extra transitional homes across the four projects.

The other recent transitional housing projects have included Garus and Cottingham in Māngere and Busby Ave in Blockhouse Bay.

The Atkinson Ave complex in Ōtahuhu will provide 83 new warm, dry transitional homes, managed by provider Kāhui Tū Kaha.

Kāhui Tū Kaha, the social housing provider for Te Runanga o Ngati Whatua, will manage the Atkinson Ave complex, which was designed by architects Chow Hill Auckland and built by Kalmar Construction.

“It’s encouraging to be moving people out of emergency motel accommodation and into brand new, high quality transitional housing. Atkinson Ave will allow us to provide a supportive environment to the people living there,” said Barbara Browne Kāhui Tū Kaha Chief Executive.

Since this Government took office, 2,254 transitional housing places and 5,475 new build public houses have been added across New Zealand, up to end of January 2021.

In the past 12 months, more transitional housing has been added in cities and towns across the country with increases in Auckland of 584, Waikato of 68, and East Coast of 42, with more in the pipeline.

The release in January this year of the New Zealand Public Housing Plan(external link) 2021-24, details where more public housing in regional centres and cities will be provided by June 2024.

The recently announced Housing Acceleration Fund(external link) will jump-start housing developments by funding the necessary services, like roads and pipes to homes, which are currently holding up development. This builds on the previous commitments for more public housing places so families and individuals have suitable, long term homes.
