Adapting our workforce as Kāinga Ora resets

Kāinga Ora is undergoing change as we reset the agency to focus on our core mission of providing and managing social housing in a financially sustainable way.

We’re going back to basics and concentrating our resources on being a responsible landlord who looks after our homes and tenants and serves communities well.

As the organisation continues to evolve, narrowing in on core functions and identifying more efficiencies and cost savings, our workforce will likely reduce further.

This is a continuation of the work commenced last year in response to changing priorities and to achieve further savings, while maintaining the delivery of our core functions and services.

After consulting with our people, this saw a net reduction of 540 roles in 2024.

Consultation under way

We have begun consultation with our people on how we resize the organisation to align and match our workforce with the reset of Kāinga Ora.

The proposed changes are not finalised, but this consultation could see the removal of up to 673 roles.

This consultation impacts many business groups, with a primary focus on back-office corporate roles. Tenancy management teams are not included in the consultation.

Further details on the resize will be available once the process is complete in the coming months.

A commitment to our people

We are committed to ensuring our people are the first to learn of any changes proposed.

We are mindful of the impact this may have on people so we will be making every effort to support them over this period.

The Public Service Association will also be kept informed.
