Sharing plans for a brighter future for Palmerston North

We’re sharing these proposals at a series of community drop-in sessions starting on Tuesday 7 March, and really encourage people to come along and find out more.

This is part of a huge programme of work we have underway to deliver more urgently needed housing. Since 2018 we have delivered 140 houses, providing more people and families a warm dry and safe place to call home, with more on the way.  

Building on this progress, these early plans we’re sharing now with the community suggest we could potentially deliver over 300 additional new warm, dry and healthy homes across Palmerston North. The plans focus on Roslyn, Takaro, Hokowhitu, Highbury, Terrace End, Westend, Awapuni, City Centre, and Westbrook.

These additional housing proposals would be part of our redevelopment programme. This is where we remove older houses on our larger sections which are past their best, and replace them with a greater number of newly built warm and dry homes that better meet the needs of our customers today. This helps us make the best use of the existing land we own, to deliver a greater number of homes to meet the urgent need in our communities.

As of December 2022, there are 630 people and families on the housing register in Palmerston North – which is managed by Ministry of Social Development. This is far too many people who are living in cars, motels, overcrowded homes and in other unsuitable conditions. Building more warm, dry homes would be really good news for these families and allow them to get on with their lives.

It’s important to note these are only initial stages of our proposed plans which could change as we progress. Before we look to build more homes, we are keen to work with the Palmerston North community to understand what works for the community, what doesn’t, and what can be improved.
