Home delivery! More transitional homes for Mangere

Produced using offsite manufacturing, 11 of the new warm, dry Kāinga Ora homes will arrive at Cottingham Crescent this week, while a further 17 homes and a community building are being transported to nearby Garus Avenue.

Transitional housing provides people and families with a safe place to live, and wraparound support services, while they are helped to find appropriate long-term accommodation.

“The 21 two-bedroom and seven three-bedroom homes are much needed in the Mangere area to help provide people and whānau a warm, dry safe place to live,” says Kāinga Ora Special Advisor to the Chief Executive, Andrew Booker.

The homes are part of the 1,000 transitional homes announced as part of the Aotearoa New Zealand Homelessness Action Plan, developed to prevent and reduce homelessness in New Zealand.

Of the 28 new homes, 11 were built by Perry Modular Homes in Cambridge, while the remaining 17 homes and the community building were produced by BuiltSmart in Huntly. The community building provides a space where people can gather and get to know one another. It can also be used as a two-bedroom home.

Andrew Booker says: “Kāinga Ora and its build partners are among those leading the charge when it comes to offsite manufacturing.

“There are significant benefits to this method of construction, including reduced waste, increased efficiency and time savings of up to forty percent compared to traditional building methods.”

Kāinga Ora’s use of offsite manufacturing has grown significantly over the past five years, and will only continue to grow as we work to deliver more quality state homes at pace, Andrew says.

“We’re proud to be working with local businesses to provide Kiwis with these much-needed homes.”

The homes will be managed by two contracted providers of housing and support services. The first homes will be available for people and whānau to start living in around September.
