Kāinga Ora is boosting the supply of public housing in Otago by redeveloping its properties across Mosgiel and purchasing new homes from local developers.

One of the ways it plans to continue to increase the supply of public housing in the region is by replacing some of its older homes with more new homes on the same site.

The redevelopment of five sites across Mosgiel, will see 9 existing Kāinga Ora properties, nearing the end of their economic life, replaced with 20 new, warm and dry homes for whānau in need. The redevelopment sites are in Doon, Green, High and Spey Streets.

The 20 new homes will be mix of one- and two-bedroom and will be well suited to modern lifestyles, coming with their own off-street parking. Eight of the homes will be built to full universal design standards, which means they are more accessible and are, or can be made to be, fit for purpose for customers with mobility issues.

Argyle Street development

Otago Southland Regional Director, Kerrie Young says increasing the number of homes on some of our sites means more people in need can live in areas like Mosgiel that are close to schools, open spaces, shops and other amenities.

“There is an urgent requirement for more public housing options in Otago and the redevelopment of these Mosgiel sites will help us meet some of this need.

“In our planning for new homes, we consider a number of things, such as privacy, safety, parking and access to sunlight which have all been a top priority for these redevelopments,” says Ms Young.

Demolition of the existing homes and site preparations are expected to commence on some of the sites over the coming months with completion of the redevelopments scheduled for throughout 2024.

Kāinga Ora has also signed agreements with three local developers to purchase an additional 13 new homes in Mosgiel. The homes across the three developments include:

  • 4 one-bedroom and 2 two-bedroom homes on Wickliffe Street scheduled for completion in mid-June 2023
  • 4 two-bedroom homes on Argyle Street scheduled for completion by the end of July 2023
  • 3 two-bedroom homes on King Street scheduled for completion in December 2023.

“As these exciting developments are completed and construction of our own redevelopments gets underway, we will keep neighbours and the local community well informed, offering opportunities for people to engage with us on this work.

“We are also exploring opportunities to redevelop a number of our other properties in the same neighbourhoods and will be engaging further with the community as they are confirmed.

“We’re really looking forward to delivering these new homes to the Mosgiel community,” Ms Young says.
