About the Winter Energy Study

Kāinga Ora and Mercury have teamed up to trial capped bills for your electricity use this winter (2024). This means that your bills for the months of May to September will be capped at a set amount. You’ll be able to use as much electricity as you need to heat your home and will never pay above this amount for the electricity you use each month. Kāinga Ora will pay for the portion of your usage above your Cap directly to Mercury.

About your Cap

Your household will have its own Cap which is based on your past usage data with Mercury.

You can find your household’s Cap information in your Welcome Pack or by calling Mercury on 0800 10 18 10.

About the Capped Period

Your bills for the months of May to September 2024 will be capped.

You can find the start date of your Capped Period in your Welcome Pack or by calling Mercury on 0800 10 18 10.

You will receive a reminder before your Capped Period is due to end. At that stage, Mercury will stop applying your Cap, you don't need to do anything.

After the Capped Period has ended, Kāinga Ora will not pay for any portion of your electricity bill.

Provided you stick to Mercury’s Fair Use Policy* you can use as much electricity as you need to heat your home during the Capped Period.

How to track your usage in the Mercury app / My Account

During the Capped Period you will be able to view your usage graph in your Mercury App/My Account as usual. However, the graphs will not show your Cap amount. But don't worry, your Cap and Kāinga Ora subsidy will be applied on your electricity bill each month.
