State-of-the-art development to rise from the ashes of former state home

A vacant house recently gutted by fire in Auckland’s Point Chevalier is set to become the site of yet another modular Kāinga Ora public housing development.
Eight houses on Great North Rd have now been demolished to make way for a six-storey apartment block containing 63 new, warm and dry homes, six of which will be fully accessible.
The development will use modular homes, meaning each one-bedroom apartment will consist of a single factory-built module or ‘pod’ manufactured off-site.
Kāinga Ora General Manager Construction and Innovation Patrick Dougherty says the innovation will help fast track the delivery of public housing.
“Innovation is one of five key priority areas of Building Momentum - our construction plan for future homes. Off-site manufacturing will help to streamline the design and delivery of new builds,” he says.
“It’s yet another New Zealand build project that will make use of fully pre-fabricated, high quality modular homes. It will vastly reduce construction time and increase the delivery of housing so we can provide more new warm and dry homes for our public housing customers.”
All of the homes come complete with kitchen and bathroom components – they simply need to be connected and stacked into place within the building.
Kāinga Ora has been working on the project with Tawera Group and Teak Construction. The development has great amenity and is within walking distance of local shops and services, and transport connections.
Following the issuing of building and resource consents, the project is expected to be completed within 10 months.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand investigated the early morning blaze on Great North Road in mid-March and have not determined the cause.
