Kāinga Ora has confirmed work on 16 new social homes at the former Longford Tavern site, located in Gore will begin later this month.
The new social housing development will have 14 single-storey stand-alone homes, comprising of two bedrooms, and one pair of duplex homes. Some of the homes will have accessibility features to suit a range of needs.
“As we renew and replace our older homes throughout the country, we're building new ones for those in need,” says Kerrie Young, Regional Director, Otago Southland and South Canterbury.
“This is a significant development for Gore, and we know it's one the community has been looking forward to since we purchased the site. We've taken the time to make sure the homes can be delivered in the most cost-effective way possible, and we're excited to see construction begin. We look forward to welcoming individuals and whānau into their new homes in mid-2026."
Kāinga Ora purchased the Hamilton Street site in May 2022 and subsequently demolished the existing building. After the decision was made to progress with redevelopment plans on this site following our assessment process, some changes were made to the original design to ensure the homes can be delivered as cost-effectively as possible. The latest resource consent was approved in August 2025.
Once complete, the homes will be matched to individuals and families on the Ministry of Social Development’s Housing Register with the highest priority for a home of that size and in that area.
