Small actions, strong community: Praveen’s story

Earlier in his life, Praveen didn’t have a stable place to live and says others helped him when he needed it most. Today, that experience shapes how he shows up for others with compassion and care.

“It only takes one gateway,” he says. “That gateway can put you on the right path.”

As one of the first residents to move into the 30‑unit Central City development in 2019, Praveen makes a point of welcoming new tenants, building connections through a friendly wave or a quick chat whenever he can.

“I want to help create a place where neighbours actually know each other, look out for one another, and no one feels isolated,” he says.

“I don’t like it when people call this a complex: it’s a community. To me, the whole place is home, and I feel a responsibility to do my part.”

His efforts go beyond friendly conversations. Praveen lends practical support to neighbours, keeps an eye on shared spaces, and steps in wherever he can.

“I help in any way possible: offering advice, being a watchful eye, and giving things to others that I don’t need,” he says. “When you help someone else, it helps you too. We lift each other up.”

One of Praveen’s most visible contributions is the care he puts into the shared community room at the site.

Each day, he opens and closes the space, makes sure neighbours have access, and helps keep shared facilities, including the drying room, clean and well cared for. He also encourages people to take part in activities such as Civil Defence workshops, cooking classes, and wellbeing sessions.

As a result, the space has become a place where neighbours come together and connect.

“He’s welcoming, inclusive, and encourages people to support one another. His positive role modelling really helps people live well together.”

Praveen’s approach is grounded in empathy. He understands that people arrive with different backgrounds and perspectives.

“You can all have different views,” he says. “But unless you talk and listen, you can’t bring those views together.”
