The 37 homes in the first stage of development at the 4.6 hectare site at 85 Collie Drive will be ready for people to move into by the end of 2022.

To help urgently deliver more much needed homes in Rotorua, these 37 homes will be manufactured off-site, saving around 40 percent of time compared to traditional builds.

This innovative approach, also being used with the 37 homes planned for stage one of the Ranolf Street/Malfroy Road site in the city, will allow much needed quality homes to be delivered faster to whānau in Rotorua.

These new homes will be a mix of two to four bedroom single storey homes, with landscaping, fences and a shared community green space. Fourteen of them meet universal design standards.

Darren Toy, Regional Director for the Bay of Plenty says the new homes are good news for Rotorua families and people in need.

“There’s a real and urgent need to get whānau and tamariki out of motels and other forms of emergency housing, and into more secure homes where they can feel settled and able to move forward with their lives.

“Through using off-site manufactured construction of the homes, along with having a build ready subdivision with services already in place, we’ll be able to provide the first 37 of these homes by the end of next year, following consents.”

Work is expected to start on site in mid-2022, with options being explored for the second stage of development of around 25 homes. The 4.6 hectare build ready subdivision was purchased for $12.6 million.

In addition, work is also underway on 35 new warm, dry homes being built on existing Kāinga Ora sites in Rotorua. Seventeen of these are planned to be ready by mid-2022, and alongside the 37 homes planned to be delivered at the Ranolf Street/Malfroy Road site, will see 54 new public homes delivered by the middle of 2022.

Kāinga Ora continues to actively and urgently look at further housing opportunities in the city including purchase, lease, development and partnership housing opportunities.
