How to apply for pre-approval for a First Home Grant before you find a property to buy.

Holiday hours for the Home Ownership Products team

The Kāinga Ora Home Ownership Products team will be out of the office over the holiday period, from 12pm on Friday 23 December until 8am on Monday 9 January 2023.

Please note that your application or any correspondence submitted during this period may not be assessed until Monday 16 January 2023.

1. Check you are eligible

If you haven't already, make sure you meet the eligibility criteria.

2. Gather your documents

You will need electronic copies (for example, PDFs) of all of these documents to attach to your online application.

3. Apply online

Make sure you have scanned copies of all the documents you need so you can upload them with your application. The online application must be completed within 59 minutes – after this it will time out and you will have to start again.

Once you're pre-approved and have found a house

You will need to provide the following documents in addition to the ones above.

If you are building a new home, you'll also need to supply:

  • a building contract and/or a quote from a quantity surveyor
  • a copy of your right to occupy Māori land, if applicable.
