Community engagement and resources
March 2023 - Local iwi Te Rūnanganui o Te Āti Awa performed the Waddington Drive blessings. It was particularly special as it was performed traditionally in Te Reo prior to the new day beginning, with specific tikanga incorporated including a greenstone gift being offered to the land. The Construction and innovation team, Place-based team, Community Engagement and Partnership team, Te Kuratou representatives all attended along with build partners Rhys Finlay Construction.
The new homes have been built by students at Whitireia and WelTec part of Te Pukenga – New Zealand Institute of skills and Technology at the Porirua campus, which sees local youth gaining valuable skills to assist with entry to apprenticeship programmes. The homes were relocated having already been constructed off-site, which allows us to reduce construction times and minimise any disruption to the wider neighbourhood. Knowing the aroha and educational opportunities that contributed to this development makes these very special homes indeed.
