Community engagement
With the strong demand for public housing in Gisborne, we have a large build programme underway. There are 270 new public homes in the pipeline.
190 are now in progress. These are homes that are currently in construction, contracted to buy off a developer once they are completed or where we are obtaining contractors to work on the development.
We have early plans for another 80 homes that would be built on our existing land that we need to make better use of. Planning for these sites is still in progress and is subject to redesign or refinement.
Community Drop-in
On the 26 March 2024 our community engagement team held a community drop-in session.
The session was an opportunity for the community to find out more about the new developments planned for the area and ask questions. You can view our interactive map(external link) that has more information about the homes we're planning for Gisborne.
Planned developments
Kāinga Ora is partnering with developers who are building new, modern homes in Tamarau. These developments will help meet the need for public housing in Tairāwhiti.
The new homes will get more whānau out of unsuitable accommodation and into a healthy place to call home. We are looking at the following sites:
- Coldstream Road and Newton Street
- Steele Road
- Matthews Road
